<HTML>The influence of Donetiz, and his strengths and weaknesses, on the U-boat campaign, is a vast subject. Obviously he had a first order impact. His WWI experiences on a U-boat also would play a factor, many for good, some for bad. But that he served in the Med, not the Atlantic? No. I think he tried very hard to apply lessons of all of WWI experience to his preparations and conduct of WWII. I don\'t think being in the Med overly colored his views.

I do think his WWI experience left him with memories of U-boat war that were badly invalid after 1942. His resistance to the possibility of radar, and ignorance of the significance of electronics in general, was critical, as was his dismissal of the power of airborne ASW, a critical factor in WWII.
