<HTML>Actually, there are a lot of two stroke diesels in trucks all over North America. Known as Detriot Diesels, they are built by General Motors and have a long history going back to WWII. The first Detriot I worked on was out of an old infantry landing craft (the venerable 6-71) Many WWII U.S. subs were powered by two-stroke V-16s known as the Winton V-type. They did have mechanical cam driven exhaust valves but recieved their intake air through a ring of ports toward the bottom of the liner.
The Fairbanks Morse was also used in subs and is still in use in many industrial applications (an electric power plant in Nebraska City, for one). The FB was an opposed piston type (rather than the horizontally opposed engine Kris refers to in Volkswagens) That means the there is no cylinder head, per se, since the pistons travel toward eachother to form the combustion chamber. This requires two crankshafts, as noted in Steve\'s post.
