You\'re absolutely right. The non-turbocharged 53 series had smaller, two-lobed blowers that were driven at higher speeds than the larger 71 and 92 series engines. In addition to that, thier no load RPM could be as high as 3000 (meaning their full horsepower rated RPM was around 2500-2700). The other engines typically topped out at 2300 RPM. The combination of the fast running blower and high RPMs made the 53 series literally howl. It was an unnerving sound that gave even expereinced mechanics the willys, since it sounded like it was running away (ungoverned). I suppose 53 series had their place at some time, but they were generally regarded as junk, and were a real pain to work on.

I understand that u-boats had a Junkers powered air compressor for backup. Do you know if this was a diesel, and if so what the engine configuration was?
