<HTML>Dear Marc Haldimann
The German midget submarines were intended for use against landing ships and their escorts, but they could not fight in rough sea. Northern Adriatic was a possible target for Allied landings and usually is a very calm sea. Sistiana bay, near Trieste, was a midget base submarine from 1943 to 1945 and remains of the facilities are still on.
Professor De Henriquez collection of war material and memorabilia contains two midget submarines; they are on exhibit in Trieste, in a place called “Museo della guerra, per la pace†hosted in former barraks.
Diego de Henriquez was killed in unclear circumstances in the seventies when I was a teenager. He was a fabulous character and spent his entire life collecting weapons, war memorabilia and documents. Rumours spread he was killed because he knew sensitive details about the Italian collaborationists during the German occupation of Trieste in 1943-45. Have a look of this site: [www.retecivica.trieste.it]
Prof. Henriquez one was considered the largest private collection of weapons in private hand. Much of it is still not available to general public.
