Good morning Volker,

I did warn you about the 'Black Stuff'. Great day for Ireland yesterday. Victory in Rugby, Cricket, and all on St Patrick's Day... Fantastic.

Back to the thread. All the Commanders suspected that the Enigma had been broken. Too many convoys not being where they were supposed to be. Too many aircraft turning up out of the blue etc. Unfortunately their suspicions were dismissed as being groundless, breaking the code was simply impossible.
I am reminded of Jurgen Oesten's tale of when he was receiving Enigma training.
He pointed out the consequeces for Germany if the code was broken, the instructor assured him that there was as much chance of winning the National Lottery as there was of the enigma code being broken. Oesten prophetically replied "Doesn't somebody win the lottery every week" !?

As usual Donitz ignored the people who actually knew what was going on.

Do Chara

Barry
