Hello, MPC,Dennis and Paul,
Iron crosses on U-9 conning tower were of two kinds : One was a fixture with imperial crown in its upper branch , a "W"( Standing for Kaiser's initial ?) in the middle , and 1914 in the lower branch. The other was a simpler Iron cross , painted, with no details . Please refer to uboataces website, insignia section.
U-24 seems to have had a different emblem...
Certainly U-9 fixture was removed when at sea.
In any case, MPC is right, this is directly linked with Weddingen's victories.
Have a nice day.
