Hi,Denis,Paul and MPC,
Some additionnal and I hope interesting information about U-9 and Iron Cross emblem, sources being CT section of this site and magazine U-BOOT IM FOCUS.
When war started, all identification marks, n° and bronze eagle nationality markings were removed.Painted insignia were allowed in case-by-case bases, but not considered as official, first one being certainly Scapa Flow snorting bull of U-47.U-9 was affected as school boat in 24.Flotille (Memel)then to 21.Flotille (Pillau), from 01/07/1940 to 01/05/1942.It is possible that painted insignia of Iron Cross was there during this period. Then, boat was transferred from Baltic to Black Sea, through land/river transportation, and affected as front boat to 30.Flotille (Constanza). There the bronze fixture of original 1914 Iron Cross was refitted.U-9 was sunk on 20/08/1944 by Soviet bomber aicraft in Constanza, raised in 1945 and scrapped after a short period in Soviet Navy.Iron cross was removed as a war trophy and is still visible to-day in Black Sea's Fleet naval museum in Sevastopol.
All of you, have a nice day.
