Each Fall the local German-American Society hosts a ceremony honoring the 22 German and Italian POWs that died and are buried at Ft. Devens in Ayer, MA. There are speeches by the German and Italian consuls, the base's current CO, wreaths are placed before the graves, each grave stone is decorated with an appropriate national flag, and a band plays the national anthems and some other national music. Among those interred there is Freidrich Steinhoff. The area is well kept by the Army and is open to visitors.
