U_Boat POW Release procedure

As part of researching a film script on U 862 I am trying to find out the release procedure for Senior U-Boat personel such as Heinrich Timm who were held by the British for some years after WW Two ended (1948 for Timm) Did they have to sign release forms, get release papers stamped at the Gate ? Were they provided with transport to the nearest railway or ferry or just allowed to walk out of the camp gates? Were they given any currency for bus, train or ferry, or did the British Government pay their way back to Germany? If any former POWs or their relatives or British Military personal can help I'd be most grateful.
