The U-boat may have been in Kirkenes, but that's in Northern Norway, which would be very possible, since it was a u-boat base there from July 1941 and until the Russians arrived.
I tried to check if there were any towns on Iceland that could be confused with Kirkenes, and the closest I got was Kirkjubæjarklaustur (translates into somthing like church farm monastery), but I think that was quite a far shot. ;-)
