Generally minesweepers were wooden-hulled vessels to protect them from magnetic
mines, They streamed a paravane on each side of the vessel. The paravanes would
cut the mine cables loose from the mine anchor and then when it popped to the surface, it was detonaded by gunfire.

As the war progressed, The Allies used the forward-firing hedgehog to launch 30#
rockets against u-boats. They were detonated by contact with the target and
were generally lethal. The Brits used up to a 1,000# depth charge and the U.S.
used up to a 700# depth charge. Their depth was preset before dropping or
launching.
