Kia Ora Dave,

I think that one type of mine that was difficult to sweep was the pressure mine which was activated by changes in water pressure caused by passing vessels.

Enter the word degaussing into a search engine and you should find some information on Wikipedia that might be of interest to you.

I doubt if the RNZN ever had minesweepers or submarines so it is all very new to you.
Keep the interest up, there is a lot to learn and so many people on these forums to help you.
