Hi Gustavo,

HMS TRIDENT was patrolling off Ponto Delgada when she sighted a darkened ship entering harbour, she fired two warning shots and when the ship failed to answer she fired in succession five torpedoes as she believed it to be a German blockade runner. The ship finally made a signal as "ROUTER PANAMA" but no identity of a ship named ROUTER could be found and it was only days later that she was properly identified as having been the BONITA.

No Italian submarine carried out an attack off Ponto Delgada on this date. The five Italian submarines you mentioned were DA PROCIDA, MAREA, VORTICE, DANDOLO and TITO SPERI, they arrived at Ponto Delgada from Bermuda on 16 October 1945, they left on 25 October for Gibraltar and eventually Taranto.

Best regards,

Platon
