Japanese subs in New Zealand waters

Hello crew

yes I know this is not about German U boats but I would like to tap into the vast knowledge of ww2 submarine warfare that members of this forum have.

Is it true that in WW2 Japan sent submarine(s) into New Zealand waters?

It is an urban myth here but I have yet to see any concrete evidence that they did operate in NZ waters.

another myth doing the rounds since ww2 is that one of the japanese subs had a plane onboard which then flew over a new zealand city having a look. wellington or auckland: not sure.

Can anyone here enlighten me or direct me towards a source that will answer my query>
