Hi Paul,

Thanks for the fascinating story, much appreciated.

I am afraid your grandfather meant another pilot though. The one reconnoitering Wellington, Auckland and several other anchorages was Lt(JG) Nobuo FUJITA (1911-1997), perhaps better known for his two later flights over the US West coast. He was not related to Cmdr Fuchida.

As WO Fujita reconnoitered Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart, Wellington (March 8), Auckland (March 13) and Suva, all during two separate patrols to that area.

David Jenkins' Battle Surface! is probably the best Western source on that issue, but Peter Grose's A Very Rude Awakening provides some new insights (and several detailed maps) as well.
