The U.S. diesel-powered subs carried two 55# demolition chargers w/timers. They were
mounted in the Forward and After Torpedo Rooms. I'm sure that the nuclear-powered
subs had a similar arrangement.
If the boat was to be compromised, the timers were were set to detonate the charges
about an hour after the boat was abandoned.
