Boom Defence Vessels

Hi Michael,
A boom defence vessel is a ship used for maintaining the buoys, hawsers and netting of a boom defence. The Germans would have had these to protect their harbours from attack by enemy surface ships and submarines. One famous incident is the attack on the Tirpitz by Royal Navy X-craft

Re OBVs, Germany did not have a real need for them in either war as Germany and some other continental countries were the final destination of such ships. The OBVs were used to try and prevent said ships reaching the enemy. Remember, the British Isles have water all around them.
