I have been scouring thru the U-Boot Archives websites searching for more information about a German relative of my wife. His widow has recently given me a copy of his "Dienstleistungszeugnis", dated 24 Oktober 1947, prepared by British Naval Headquarters, Naval Document Centre in Hamburg. According to this document which is a synopsis of his Kriegsmarine career from when he joined on 1 Oct. 1939 to VE Day, 8 May 1945. After first being assigned and trained in Minensuchboots (Minesweepers) serving in both the Baltic and North Seas, he transferred to Uboots on 7 June 1943. After training he was assigned as a Wachoffizer on a Uboot serving in the Baltic from 31 Oct. 1943 to 19 Dec 1943. From 20 Dec 1943 to 15 June 1944 he served in the Meditteranean Sea on the U-407 as a Wachoffizier, which was later sunk in 19 Sep 1944 off the coast of Greece according to your uboot archive. He was promoted to Oberleutnant zur See on 14 May 1944. From 17 July 1944 to 6 Nov 1944 he was Kommandanten-Shiller on a Uboot in the Baltic (Grosse; 500t.,16,5 sm., 2000 Ps) Which Uboot is that? From 7 Nov 1944 to 8 Mar 1945 he was Kompaniechef and Lehrer at Unterseebootslehrdivision. From 9 Mar 1945 to 15 Apr 1945, he was Unterseeboot Kommandant (Grosse: 2000 t., 13,4 sm.,) in the North Sea. Which Uboot is that? From 16 April 1945 to 8 May 1945, he again was assigned to Unterseebootslehrdivision. He was released by the British on 8 Dec 1947 in Hamburg and returned to his family in Cuxhaven. He sailed with the Swedish Merchant Marine and in the 1950's was an Elbe River pilot as were his father, grandfather and greatgrandfather.

Do you have any additional info on his naval career. As many who served in the military, he did relate any of his wartime experiences with his family.
