U-552 early or late?

I'm building the Revell 1/144 kit of the Type VIIC U-Boat. I want to make it into the U-552 circa April 1942. However, the kit allows an early or late version. Does anyone know what version the ship was in during Apr 42? Also, are there U-boat sailors (or something similar) available in this scale that I can pose on the deck? Any ideas on improving on the kit would be appreciated too.
