<HTML>G\'day,
There was one U Boat - U862 - and she did sink a ship (SS Robert J Walker) in the Sth Pacific (I would have said Tasman Sea myself) off the Sthn New South Wales coast of Australia at Christmas 1944. She then took herself round New Zealand (definitely in the Sth Pacific) and back to Java via the Southern and Indian Oceans.
As for merchant shipping in the South Pacific (or lack of!), I\'d have to disagree with parade\'s comments. There was a lot of shipping active in the Sth Pacific which is why Heinrich Timm (U862 comd)thought the east coast of Australia was such an attractive target. I may remind you that we had a bit of a war going on over this side of the globe as well!
About the legend , its definitley a great yarn.

Cheers
Adrian</HTML>
