<HTML>Hi Chaps,
Concerning boats, Australia and the Pacific.
U-862 - a type IXD - sailed from Batavia on Nov 17th 1944 under the command of Korvetten-Kapitan Timm. He sailed down the West coast of Australia before turning East and attacking - in broad daylight and on the surface - the Greek tanker Illisos on Dec 9th 1944. The tanker fired back so Timm submerged - but not before he had damaged the tanker.
He then sank the Liberty ship Robert J. Walker on Dec 24th off South Australia before sinking another Liberty ship, the Peter Silvester on Feb 6th 1945. Timm eventually sailed back to Batavia, reaching there on Feb 15th. The Australians failed to find any trace of U-862.
Timm was active in the Atlantic, Arctic, Indian and Pacific Oceans - a record held by no other kriegsmarine officer.
U-862 ended her days as the Japanese I-502. She was surendered to the Allies in August of 1945.
Hope this helps!
Aye,
