Hi John and Rainer,

On 20 June, U 99 who had a sick man requested permission from BdU to land him in Norway, I think this is probably the source of your "long message in the North Sea". U 99 was not involved in any collision with WILK or any other submarine but (as reported on this site) was bombed in error by an Arado from SCHARNHORST at 1623 on 21 June in Quadrat Qu 2883 l.u (the aircraft gave a slightly different position: Qu 2865). Two 50 kg bombs were dropped as the submarine had reached a depth of 20 meters, causing some damage. The sick man was transferred to a boat in Korsfjord and U 99 aborted her patrol and returned home.

Regarding U 122, it does appear that she made a signal referring to the sinking of EMPIRE CONVEYOR described as a Royal Mall steamer sunk in AM 5351. At least this is inferred to in the report on her loss signed by Godt. The attack was observed from a distance By U 61.

Best regards,

Platon
