Hi John,
I have not seen the collision report by SAN FELIPE so I have no opinion on the matter. ARABIS carried out an attack on a U-boat at 2213/23.06.1940 in 49°21' N, 08°47' W. This could well have been U-122 as she was supposed to go to Grid Square CF 30 and this was certainly in the general direction.
By digging through my files, I did locate the last signal Of U 122 which is dated 0035/21 June and reports an attack with a salvo on a passenger ship in Quadrat AM 0279 without success, the ship apparently zigging away and an attack on Royal Mail steamer of 11,000 tons which was sunk in AM 5351 (no doubt this refers to EMPIRE CONVEYOR). She reported heavy enemy air activity as she was proceeding Southward.
Apparently she was attacked by an aircraft of 209 squadron after the sinking of EMPIRE CONVEYOR and perhaps also by one of 207 Squadron earlier in the day. I do not know the identity of the first ship attacked, can anyone provide me with a clue? This was probably early on 20 June. Is this was really her last signal? The KTB of BdU reports on 27 June that U 122 arrived off Cape Finisterre so she may have sent a short signal announcing her arrival in the operation area but one cannot be absolutely sure.
The steamer BELGRAVIAN was reported torpedoed at 1246/24 June 1940 in 47°32' N, 04°54' W. This is not in Rohwer's book; can anyone confirm if she was indeed damaged on this date? This could be an error: one cannot forget that these were very stressful times! Apparently, she was sunk by U-372 in 1941.
