For information, it appears that the Kptl Gert Hetschko lacked the skills to become a good commander.


06/1941-25/06/1941 Baubelehrung "U 453" Deutsche Werke AG, Kiel-Gaarden / Kriegsschiffbaulehrabteilung für Unterseeboote Ostsee, Kiel-Gaarden. (Instruction in the final stage of construction in shipyard.)

26/06/1941-08/07/1941 Kommandant "U 453" / 7 U-Flotilla, Kiel.
Boat in trials and exercises after it commissioned. The U 453 rammed and sunk a light-ship at night during its trial. Kptlt. Gert Hetschko was removed from the command and replaced by Oblt. Egon-Reiner Frhr. von Schlippenbach.

20/04/1943-12/05/1943 WO Überplanmäßig u. Kommandantenschüler, Konfirmand "U 89" [Kdt. Lohmann] / 9. U-Flottille, Brest. (Supernumerary Watch Officer and U-Boat Commander under training. One war cruise without return 18 days.
