Re: Encounter of ship Nyassa with U-214, September 1942

From the U-214 KTB:
24.09.42 DH 8181 (28°45'00"N, 019°26'00"W [grid square center]) 2330 (hrs) Port. "NYASSA" stopped, checked. Steamer is underway from Casablanca to Trinidad. She has 450 tons of cork (for Mexico) and 764 Spanish emigrants with their furniture on board. In addition, she is carrying wine.
There is no note as to the reason why the ship was allowed to proceed. My personal reasoning is that Capt. Reeder was aware that the "NYASSA" was mainly used for transporting refugees.
I have taken this information from an abbreviated U-214 KTB - there might be additional information in the "original" KTB.
