I wanted to know if any member knew how many tanks the ss. Fairport carried when sunk by the U-161. Three figures are given in internet sources, 52 tanks, 250 tanks by the Scientific Journal and a former harbor master of the NY Port Authority and 80 by a German language publication. Most writers avoid a number by saying "a deck load of tanks." It is known that the "Sea Train Texas" carried a cargo of 250+ tanks to replace ss Fairport. If in fact "Fairport" had 250 tanks on board it would become probably the most valuable military cargo lost on a single ship in the war.
