Thanks, Eric.
I already got some mails about this discovery and was also asked some questions about discrepancies between the reports in the media and our page about the sinking of GAIRSOPPA: [uboat.net]
Especially about a detail apparently missing on our page: the survivors were allegedly fired upon by the U-boat while abandoning ship in the lifeboats. For example the quote “forcing them to try to get into lifeboats under ruthless machine gun fire from the submarine.” from here: [www.independent.co.uk]
This probably originates from this quote “The crew of British and East Indian sailors abandoned ship under U-boat machine gun fire” from the website of Odyssey Marine Exploration: [shipwreck.net]
Without knowing the source for this detail it is impossible to verify for us. However, from the attack description of U-101 it is difficult to believe that guns were used during this attack as this would have been prevented by heavy seas. The waves were so high that even the torpedoes had troubles to keep the set courses and depth.
Best regards
