Joseph:
Only four (4) U-boats surrendered to the U.S. at the end of WWII
and they were as follows:
U-234 surrendered to the U.S. Coast Guard vessel SUTTON and was
directed to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on 19 May, 1945, by
the American Crew. There were three other U-boats (U-805, U-873
and U-1228) tied up there who had recently surrendered. All these
boats were part of the U-boat Flotilla #33.
The U-1228 surrendered to the USS NEAL SCOTT on 11 May, 1945, and
arrived in Portsmouth, NH on 17 May,1945.
The U-585 was escorted by the U.S Coast Guard cutter ARGO on
14 May, 1945 to Ft. Miles, Delaware.
No WWII U-boats ever went to Newport News. I checked with the
curator at the Mariner's Museum in Newport News.
During WWI the German U-boat DEUTCHLAND did visit there.
If you question this info, you may want to check with the curator
at the U-boat Museum in Cuxhaven, Germany.
Have a great day,
ROBERT .
