Dear Robert,
I have seen your message of 12 January which starts off by saying that only 4 (R) 4 U-Boats surrendered in the US in May 1945.
In fact I think that you really meant 5!
This is because you then list 5 U-Boats in the text of your message, albeit that the number of U-858 is muddled (you say U-585!).
For clarity, the 5 U-Boats that surrendered in the US at the end of the war were:
U-234, U-805, U-858, U-873 and U-1228.
Of these, U-234, U-805, U-873 and U-1228 were taken into Portsmouth Navy Yard very soon after surrendering at sea.
In the case of U-858, it was taken into Fort Miles, Lewes, Delaware, and then - as far as I can tell - it went straight to New London.
I have an extract from the PNY Daily Log Book for U-Boat movements between 15 May 1945 and 14 May 1954, and that records only U-234, U-805, U-873 and U-1228 arriving at PNY in May 1945. I also have info about U-858 being refitted in New London.
I hope that helps, and sorry to contradict you.
Yours aye
Derek
