To add, if I were guessing (and it will only be a guess), I would say that U-505 is more likely to have propeller dents than most average boats. If you'll look at photos on this site and also on www.uboatarchive.net, you'll notice that the boat is shown out of the water frequently (some photos seem to be associated with US tests and naval measurements after the surrender). Besides this "abnormal" treatment, the boat was moved around different storage areas and finally transported to Chicago -- all of which would increase the opportunity for damage tot he propellers and the likelihood that the damage would occur.
It would be interesting to compare photos of boats 1939-1945, with U-505 and the German "memorial" boat (at Libau???) to see if the surviving boats show more damage now than was typical in service.
