Scuttling May 45

In the book 'Unconditional Surrender', it is stated that those boats in the North Sea and Baltic, which received the code word 'Regenbogen' did scuttle. However it is stated that in some cases some crewmen died voluntarily aboard their boats. Is it known, is this correct?, which boats and which men? were involved, and why did they do it? john
