Do try to research this some more. I would not be discouraged by anyone who was not with the people in Maine when they seen the events.
The reason I tell you this is that a good friend of mine that retired from the Navy was stationed in Coronado during the sixties. He was in Naval Intelligence and there he claims he came across old reports of a similar event in Maine during WW II. My friends and I never thought this was true and figured he was just telling us a \"Sea Story\".
But in the past there have been such rumors and maybe it\'s time to research it some more. As I said most if not all of the answers you are getting are from people who were not there or were not in the U.S. during the war.
