<HTML>The route to command certainly varies from one Navy to another. American line officers are nearly all engineers, and, for modern US subs, a thorough grounding in nuclear engineering is mandatory for command. British and German line officers may know little or nothing about engineering, but get a lot tougher education in tactics and operations. Engineers are engineers, have their own branch, and don\'t command vessels. The route to higher rank in most services, of course, usually involves getting out of subs and into surface vessels; frequently A/S work for ex-submariners. In the US Navy, flag rank seems to become a lot more attainable if you\'re also a pilot, as only pilots can command aircraft carriers. (A requirement that may explain some of the more egregious errors in ship handling, though the original idea was mainly to keep the battleship types from grabbing the carrier commands.)
