Tracing information about my Father-in-law

Hi

My Father in law was Franz Kusch, he died some years ago.
He was on U boats during the war.
He was depth charged twice and survived - the 1st time he was picked up by a German ship so was given some short rest time and then sent out again, the next time he was depth charged, he was picked up by a UK ship so was made a prisoner of war, he stayed in the UK the rest of his life never returning Germany.

He married and had 6 children, my wife is his oldest child.

I am trying to trace Franz's war record? to find what U boats he was on, what rank (if any) if he was entitled to any medals that I could replace for my wife.

Does anyone know where/ how I go about doing this?

I have emailed the intentinal red cross who I beleiev hold these records but if I can do more i am happy to look at pther avenues of investigation.

Thank you all, any help is much appreciated.
