<HTML>This towed U-boat missile was called PROJEKT TEST STAND XXII. Each pod contained one rocket and was able to submerge with the U-boat. In war time practice this would have been very impractical ,but this was the logical first step. It would be another 12 years before rocket launching from within a submarine was safe and practical. After the war the towed idea was dropped and the missile or rocket was stored in a container and launched from a ramp on the deck of the boat. Before Russian subs used internal missile tubes they fired their missiles from external watertight containers that would raise up from the deck into postion by big pistons ( ECHO II class subs ) . It is very dangerous and complex to launch a rocket from inside a submarine and opted for the towed idea instead, they did try firing from the deck small unguided rockets also ( 30cm wurfkörper 42 spreng ) . I have not found alot of books on this subject but this is what I found :
U-BOATS by DAVID MILLER ( page 102 )
SECRET WONDER WEAPONS OF THE THIRD REICH by J.MIRANDA and P.MERCADO ( page 120 ) , nice color diagram
U-BOOTWAFFE 1939-1945 Cz.3 by WALDEMAR TROJCA 9 PAGE 87-90 ) ,great book ,but it is written in Polish !! , has great diagrams .
If you are interested in the details of missile tubes ( dangers and construction and other technical detail stuff ) please see PRINCIPLES OF NAVAL WEAPONS SYSTEMS by DAVID R.FRIEDEN ( CHAPTER 17 ) .</HTML>
