I have a book that matches your description, its called ‘ Kriegsmarine U-Boats (The Essential Submarine Identification Guide)It could be the one your looking for. I think it was published about 2006, oh yeah, it’s hardback and has a black and white cover. Published by Amber. There’s loads of them for sale on EBay and Amazon.
