Hi Ken
I agree entirely what you have described the awful conditions that the crew of a
U-boat had to live with and endure long patrols at sea. The movie "Das Boot" does
give some idea what it was like onboard the U-boot. I would recommend COYS1882 to
Read the book "The U-Boat Century German Submarine Warfare 1906-2006 by Jak Mallmann Showell. See Chapter 14 "The Men" page 198 and 199 for a detailed descriptions of the living conditions inside the U-boat. This book is published by
Chatham Publishing Park House,1 Russell Gardens,London NW11 9NN OR you can e-mail
info@chathampublishing.com Jak's father Jak Mallmann was Diesel Obermaschinist
on board U-377 and he lost his life at sea on his 13th.operational tour in January
1944 when ironically his boat was sunk by a German torpedo meaning that it was
a circling torpedo fired by U-377.Hope this will be some help to COYS1882.
I wish to thank Ken for all his contributions to this forum and you are an inspiration to U-boat members. Kind Regards Denis Martin FTU
