He led attacks against the Normandy invasion fleet in June, 1944 (sinking norwegian DD Svenner), and was decorated with the Knight`s Cross and the Oak Leaves.
After the war, in 1955, he joined the german Bundesmarine and served first in the MoD. Afterwards, he commanded the 2nd frigate and the 1st DD squadron and, finally, was Commander of the Naval Operations School, retiring in 1968, finishing a notable carreer.
