hi,

These later promotions were older officer candidates (mid-20s) who had more experience, joined later, and thus received less training.

One of them was Heinrich Hoffmann. He had joined the navy in 1928, had been an Able Seaman and a Petty Officer in torpedo boats, was selected for officer candidate ("from the low ranks") in 1933 and promoted to Leutnant zur See together with the other Crew 33 members on October 1, 1936.
During the war, he commanded, successively, the torpedo boats T 11, Greif, Falke and T 24. In October, 1943, he became the Senior Officer of 5th torpedo boat flotilla. He led attacks against the Normandy invasion fleet in June, 1944 (sinking norwegian DD Svenner), and was decorated with the Knight`s Cross and the Oak Leaves.
After the war, in 1955, he joined the german Bundesmarine and served first in the MoD. Afterwards, he commanded the 2nd frigate and the 1st DD squadron and, finally, was Commander of the Naval Operations School, retiring in 1968, finishing a notable carreer.

greetings, Urs
