Dear,

Chenango's description of the contact with a U-boat can be found at [catalog.archives.gov].

The position 3059N-8104W translates to the grid reference DB6417.
Alas, I can find no German submarine that at the end of January 1942 operated in or near that area - those operating near the American east coast were all further north.

In [www.uboat.net] you may enter a date and see the positions of all U-boats at sea on that date, all graphically presented on a map. None was close to the position of Chenango's sighting.
