Hello,
I’ve found some data in Cabinet Papers (https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/cabinetpapers/cabinet-gov/cab66-second-world-war-memoranda.htm#Cabinet%20Memoranda%201939%20to%201945), which can be considered as interesting, concerning the episode in subject, in particular in the following Weekly Résumé of the Naval, Military and Air Situation:
- N. 197 (from 0700 3rd June, to 0700 10th June, 1943), see [filestore.nationalarchives.gov.uk])
- N. 198 (from 0700 10th June, to 0700 17th June, 1943) see [filestore.nationalarchives.gov.uk])
- N. 199 (from 0700 17th June, to 0700 24th June, 1943), see [filestore.nationalarchives.gov.uk]
In the N. 197, no loss of merchant ship in the Mediterranean area is recorded.
In the N. 198, in the section “Enemy Attack on Shipping” it is reported that “Five ships are reported to have been sunk by U-boats during the week. In the Mediterranean a British Tanker and a Dutch ship were sunk off the coast of Palestine and a ship in an eastbound convoy off Bougie”. I did not mention the ships out of theMediterranean area.
The British tanker should be the Athelmonarch, sunk on 15/06/43, SW of Haifa, by U-97 and the Dutch ship should be the Palima, sunk off Beyrouth on 12/6/43 by U-97
Maybe the ship in an eastbound convoy off Bougie could be identified as that torpedoed by Brin, although unidentified yet.
In the Résumé N. 199, section “Enemy Attack on Shipping” it is reported that “Three ships are reported to have been attacked by U-boats during the week. (…) One ship in an eastbound convoy was sunk off Algiers. The s.s. Yoma (8,131 tons), in convoy from Gibraltar to Alexandria, was sunk north of Cyrene (Cyrenaica). Of a total of 1,670 service personnel on board, 1,353 were rescued.” I did not mention the ships out of the Mediterranean area.
Yoma was sunk by U-453 on 17/6/1943, NW of Derna; the ship sunk off Algers should be the British Brinkburn, by U-73, W of Algiers, on 22/6/1943.
Maybe the story of HMS Wishart was not entirely a bogus.
Hope this contribution be interesting.
Regards
Fabrizio
