I'd love to see a movie made about the german spies who landed on Long Island by submarine. Its amazing nobody made a movie about this incident. It would be the ultimate spy movie.
In 1942, this story was reported on page 1 of nearly every paper in the country. It was a bigger story than was the battle of Midway. Americans were scared to death that Nazi spies came to our shores by submarine.
Can you imagine how Coast Guardsman John Cullin felt when he realized that he had spoken with 4 Nazi spys who had just been on a U boat a few minutes before ? Its a good thing that Cullin didn't see those spies when they were being rowed ashore by armed German sailors. They would have killed him on the spot or anyone else.
The case of the 8 Nazi sabatuers set a legal precedent , it was the first time that a military tribunal was used to try enemy combatants. Vice President Dick Cheney and Attorney General John Ashcroft cited the Trial of the eight Nazi spys as legal precedent for trying Al Queda members before military tribunals.
I hope they make a movie about the spys. I'd like to see the Coast Guardsman get his due. His actions probably saved alot of lives.
