<HTML>In actuality, black XOs would have been impossible on a US sub during WWII. There were no black officers in the US Navy until 1945, and the first appointed served on a PC. The first to graduate from Annapolis was Class of '49, which would indicate none were admitted prior to '45. Blacks couldn't even enlist until the 1920s, and weren't allowed as general service personnel until 1943. Before that they could only be mess attendants. By way of contrast, the first Japanese American graduated from Annapolis in the 1870s.
