<HTML>The DE was authentic enough because they did a lot of second unit shooting on a real one. The u-boat interiors were something the scene shop cobbled together with very little regard for authenticity. Since the movie was mainly a character study of the two commanders, possibly they didn't feel they needed to spend the extra money on the set -- or the uniforms, either, for that matter. There may be a touch of technical-limitation fudging, too. (Rodenberry always said that the Enterprise wouldn't have had those wide corridors if it was real, but they needed room for the cameras. They were a lot bulkier then.)
