<HTML>Woody:
I saw "K-19: THE WIDOWMAKER" on 7/19/02 and failed to carry cotton for my ears, however, it was a very exciting, though somewhat confusing at times. It is hard for me to go see a flick like this, including "U-571".........I've not had that problem with "DAS BOOT", and I've seen it six times and hold the video.
After all the objections of the original script by some of the survivors of K-19, I did
not see many references to drunk crewmembers, with the exception of the
Reactor Officer, that was "canned." Drinking the red wine was handled tastefully
for "medicinal purposes" in the event of hi-dose radiation exposure. We, in the
U.S. boomer Navy carried beer, to assist in flushing-out the airborne contamination
that had been ingested. There's not much anyone can do about the type of
radiation exposure the "volunteers" received on K-19.
In my opinion, Liam Neeson carried the movie. His role as the Executive Officer, depicted his responsibilities with respect to the crew; he is the "father-figure" that
the crew enjoyed before he was demoted as CO. Harrison Ford wasn't very interested in the crew's well-being, but certainly wanted them well trained in all
aspects and emergencies in his boat. At the end he came to realize this, when
the "volunteers" jury-rigged a repair to the primary coolant line in the reactor compartment. He was pushing for another star on his shoulder boards, but never
received it.
Don't let an olde "bubblehead" discourage you, go see it and judge for youerself, OK?
