I have both and personally prefer the directors cut.
The original release does have merits as being the orignal. A great film. I have just about worn out that VHS tapes from playing the film regularly.
I do however recommend the directors cut and the DVD if you have set up. The added material does flush out the story a bit better and the sound has been reworked. The DVD version offers a narrative by Petersen on the film and the process and thinking behind the film and also comments from Prochnow. A very nice feature.
