the person who played Capt. Wolfgang von Kleinschmidt role in Spielberg's "1941" is Christopher Lee. He, who is famous for his "bad guy" roles in the movies, actually is one WW2 veteran and fought in the Finnish-Soviet Winter War and, as a RAF intelligence officer, in the Western Desert Campaign because of his fluent German, Italian and French.

The Jap sub was just a model. See:
