<HTML>James Martindale:
When you look at the movie again, when Ned Beatty spots the silhouette of I-19 on the surface. It's the same as the four Japanese Type KRS subs, I-121, I-122, I-123 and I-124. They were based on the German U-125 obtained by Japan after WWI.
(The HIJMS obtained 13 various type U-boats, the U.S. obtained only six.) Source:

Actually, there were no I-class Japanese subs. Source: [64.124.221.191.htm]
Part of the "1941" story is loosely based on the real I-19's "Tabular Record of
Movement" for 14 December, 1941, which reads as follows: "After the unsucccessful pursuit of the carrier (USS ENTERPRISE (CV-6) the I-19 and the other submarines joined by the I-10 and the I-26 are ordered to the West Coast and
attack American shipping. The I-19 is assigned to patrol off Los Angeles. Vice Admiral Shimizu also orders the I-15, -9, -10, -17, -19, -23, and the I-25 to shell the West Coast on the night of 25 December." (LCDR Narahara was CO of I-19, and was credited with sinking of an American merchant vessel.) Source: Bob Hackett & Sander Kingsepp's "SENSUIKAN!" [www.combined] fleet.com/I-19.htm
Back to the movie........
When the two clowns in the "Ferris Wheel", (Murray Hamilton and Eddie Deeezer)
fire at the Jap sub, notice the "bulge" forward of the fairwater at deck level. This was typical of the same "bulge" on the Type IXA, IXB and IXD and the VIIC U-boats.
When John Belushi crashes his P-40 near the I-19, he boards it and whacks the breech of the deck gun and then bounces off this "bulge".........
The scene where Kleinscmidt (Christopher Lee) is tossed overboard, the "bulge" is shown again. No HIJMS subs had a "bulge" in that location. Source: "U-BOATS" by David Miller.
Another comical one........The gun crew on the I-19 installs a canvas cover over the breech of the deck gun, to protect it against what?
WHAT ABOUT THAT RECOIL ON THE SINGLE-BARRELED 40MM AA GUN????
Here's a "shitty" one for you....
How and where did Japanese submariners defecate during submerged operations?
Cheers,
