<HTML>hi David
can't add much to Robert's links really.
Cpt Hideo Tomonago traveled to germany on the U-180 bringing torpedos, a 30 mm gas-pressure self-loading cannon and quantities of gold (payment for german technology). according to Hirschfeld he "...came to germany ostensibly to inform himself about u-boat development.....in japan he was credited with the invention of an automatic depth keeping device, a sort of iron chief engineer." it goes on to say his interests went wider, but he was also a sub expert.
Gerhard Falcke, the naval construction expert aboard the U-234, aparently disappeared after interrogation and mystery still surrounds what became of him. Geoffrey Brooks speculates that his co-operation with US intelligence on the nature of the radio-active cargo material was instrumental in the decision to deploy nuclear weapons against Japan. as of march 2000 documents were still being 'illegally' withheld by the US gov.on the matter.
if you have hirschfeld's book, i can copy the passages that deal with Fehler's command of the U-234.
