Choice #3 probably didn't compare to #1 because of the fact that it was an early 1970s production and didn't have the production advantages of more current documentaries. Excellent though for its access to key personnel of the U-Boat war (KarlDonitz, Peter Gretton, etc.).

You asked about which "film" is the best...if you mean feature film and not documentary then it is, in my mind, "Das Boot" by far. This site has had a long running discussion on the pros of "Das Boot" and the cons of "U-571" which I tend to agree with!!

Here is one more documentary...it emphasizes the Battle of the Atlantic with a heavy Canadian component (Canada's navy became the world's 3rd largest in WWII).

Published by the National Film Board of Canada in 1995.
