Here's an excerpt from "FILMING DAS BOOT: The Other side of WWII" by Captain Hans-Joachim Krug, which appeared in the U.S. Naval Institute "Proceedings" magazine- June 1996 issue:

"Whether the artist should be allowed to interpret historical patterns in this way is a valid question. But remember that, first, this is a dramatic rendering of the role
endurance plays in a war using the submarine war as a vehicle, and second, that
a feature ffilm's dramatic sequences cannot be held to the completely different criteria of a documentary--even though the feature aims at documentary truth. After
all, the same holds true for Bucheim's novel."

Perhaps Michael should read this 6-page article, which I have mailed to you sometime ago........
